Escape

Escape is a large project composed of boats representing the refugees who passed the Aegean Sea in 2015.

Each family of boats symbolizes refugees from a specific country. For example the golden boats are representing the refugees from Syria and the Silver boats the refugees from Iraq.

The size of the boats is calculated according to the number of people who crossed the Aegean Sea. The largest boats represent 100'000 people while the smallest represent one person.

The black boats symbolize the unfortunate people who died trying to escape for a better life. They were 571 in between January 2015 and March 2016.

In 2015 851'319 refugees passed through the Aegean Sea. About half of them were from Syria, 204'316 from Afghanistan, 85'132 from Iraq, 25540 from Pakistan, 8'513 from Somalia.

38% were children.
